Esperance Tunis secured an away win against fellow CAF Champions League favourites Raja Casablanca while JS Kabylie could have scored more versus Vita Club.
JS Kabylie 1-0 Vita Club
This was the first match of the 2019/2020 Group Stage. It was what you would expect from an ordinary CAFCL fixture. The home team dominated, they were wasteful and finally managed to put a chance past the visiting goalkeeper.
The only goal of the match was scored by Toufik Addadi in the 66th minute. He was assisted by main man Rezki Hamroune.
The result had us harkening back to JS Kabylie’s last group stage opener, which was way back in 2010.
In that season, they bested Ismaily and Al Ahly but fell to TP Mazembe in the semifinals.
Raja Casablanca 0-2 Esperance Tunis
Raja was the only home team to lose in matchday one. They simply could not come back from the dream start made by Esperance. The Tunisians lost 5 players from their back-to-back CAF Champions League winning squad. Read about how they did it.
They made little of that in Casablanca. The lethal Anice Badri scored the opener in the 8th minute and, in the 15th minute, Ibrahim Ouattara put the match beyond the hosts. Raja Casablanca were forceful in their attempts for another comeback – they came back from my 4-1 down against Wydad just a few days ago. But Esperance is better than Wydad Casablanca 😉 so there was no chance of a repeat remontada.
