What is at stake?
These two teams will be meeting for an incredible 9th time in just 4 seasons.
Over those encounters, Wydad have turned out to be the better team. They knocked out Sundowns, at the quarter final stage, in 2017.
They knocked out the South Africans in the semifinals last season. Wydad have also finished higher on the two previous occasions they were in the same group. The head-to-head between the two is in favour of Wydad who have won 4, drawn 2 and lost 2.
The stakes for Sundowns will be to show that they are not outrightly inferior to Wydad.
What will the match be like?
All that said, contests between these two teams have always been close. Sundowns always try to be proactive even when playing in Casablanca. But Wydad have oft demonstrated that cynicism that allows North African teams to dominate the CAF Champions League.
Results may be slightly different this time. Wydad and their new coach are not quite as settled. Their Arab Club Cup exit story is intertwined with their battles to hold onto key players like Nahiri. Sundowns are not special but looked in good Continental form in their first group match.
Wydad Casablanca 1-1 Mamelodi Sundowns
We expect another close match. Sundowns look the better prepared side. So, this time Wydad may not end up sneaking in the typical tight win.
