1. Zamalek launch TV Channel

Zamalek TV officially went on air to coincide with the start of the new year. The station is broadcast through Egyptian satelite TV. Zamalek is arguably the second biggest football team in Africa, so this is great development for the side. This follows in the footsteps of Al Ahly, who have had their own TV channel for a while.

Promo for the new station featured Zamalek icons from past and present. One of the icons was the one and only Hassan Shehata.

2. Have African teams been added to PES 2020?

CAF PES to 2020 teams
none of this is confirmed

I am not sure anymore. The thing is that no official communication has come from Konami, the makers of Pro Evolution Soccer (PES). Even TP Mazembe’s Communication Manager, Heritier Yindula only learned of the matter from social media rumours. But everyone else is taking to them as official news.

Reports originated from a Moroccan Twitter account (@rajaoui4life) of up to 40 CAF clubs being added to PES 2020. But this is likely through unofficial updates or it is not real at all. He did share screenshots of a few of the clubs identified in the photo above.

3. Morocco Ultras

A fascinating video was shared by, news platform, Middle East Eye. It showed Moroccan Ultras chanting about plight of the youth and against poor governance in their country. Raja Casabalanca, Wydad Casablanca, FAR Rabat and Ittihad Tanger fans were the ones featured singing on the stands.

It raises questions about the place of politics in football. Should we really accept that sports be removed from something as influential as politics? It affects us on a day-to-day basis after all.

4. Jean Kasusula leaves TP Mazembe

Jean Kasusula
not bad at all

TP Mazembe announced that Jean Kasusula will be departing the club as his contract comes to an end. The 37-year old left back has been at the club since 2003. Pretty amazing, right? In that 16-year period he has gone on to win multiple CAF titles. Jean Kasusula has won the CAFCL 3 times. He has also won the CAF Super Cup 3 times and the CAF Confederation Cup 2 times.

5. Perfect Al Ahly

Al Ahly fans have good reason to remain confident about their team’s chances at winning the CAF Champions League this season. It is not just because the club has a formidable squad. Al Ahly is also enjoying incredible form domestically. The Cairo team beat MCDR 2-0 at the start of the year to maintain a perfect league run. Ahly has won all 9 Egypt Premier League matches it has played this season. Unprecedent, really.
