Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon, turned down the opportunity to host the first-ever CAFCL final played at a single venue. This means that the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League final venue will be determined based on the contestants that reach the final. You can read more about that here.
Do you remember when 15 minutes of injury time were added during the CAFCL final 2016 second leg in Egypt? We are just happy that the fiasco of the home-and-away final is over.

I am sure that you too look forward to the future of great stadiums being picked to host the CAF Champions League final. And there are many such stadiums in Africa. I would not complain if the final was played in every capital city in Africa.
That said, there are 20 stadiums (stadia? Nah!) that “deserve” hosting rights more than others. This is because they are either amazing stadiums or would contribute to the growth of our favorite club football competition.
Which are these venues? Check out our list below to find out.
20. Estadio 11 de Novembro 🇦🇴
This stadium in Luanda stands out as one of the few recent former AFCON venues that are still in great shape. It is the home of Primeiro Agosto and Petro Luanda but rarely gets the capacity crowd it deserves.
19. Orlando Stadium 🇿🇦
Orlando stadium is usually the only large venue in the CAF Champions League without a running track; every time Orlando Pirates gets to play continental football. It also has two tiers. What more do you want?
18. Al Merriekh Stadium 🇸🇩
I picked this stadium because it hosted the explosive 2010 World Cup Qualifier match between Egypt and Algeria. I would like to see something like that again. Without fan violence of course. How about, Esperance Tunis versus Wydad Casablanca?
17. Accra Sports Stadium 🇬🇭
The last good Africa Cup of Nations was played here. Unfortunately, Ghanaians have been awful at maintaining the stadium. A chance to host the CAFCL final would force them to refurbish the venue to its deserved status.
16. Stade de Marrakech 🇲🇦
It was inevitable that Morocco would show up on this list. So, why not go for the best-designed stadium in Morocco? Although I am not a fan of the athletics track on that rectangular stadium in Marrakech, I still see it as a great place to play the CAF Champions League final.
15. Moshood Abiola National Stadium 🇳🇬
Nigeria and Tunisia played what was arguably the best ever match in this stadium. Since then, the grand stadium of Abuja has not made a lot of airwaves. A final here would bring Nigeria into the CAF Champions League fold.
14. Kasarani Stadium 🇰🇪
While we are at it, why don’t we bring all the major anglophone African countries into the CAF Champions League fold? CAF taking the final to Nairobi may just be what is needed to make Kenyans switch off from the Premier League for a bit.
13. Moulay Abdellah Stadium 🇲🇦
This stadium is superior to the bowl in Casablanca. It has a dress rehearsal of hosting the CAF Confederation Cup final of the 2019/2020 season. The IAAF Diamond League holds one of its legs in Rabat as well. Moulay Abdellah stadium is ready.
12. Baraki Stadium 🇩🇿
Baraki stadium is one of the many stadiums that Algeria has been unable to compete in a timely manner. I don’t know why it takes Algeria so long to finish stadiums. I was in high school when the construction of Baraki stadium started and now I am really old 😦
11. Borg El Arab Stadium 🇪🇬
Egypt copied every African country ever and built a gigantic stadium in the middle of nowhere. They say Borg El Arab stadium is better than the Santiago Bernabeu itself. I am not too sure about that.
10. July 5 Stadium 🇩🇿
Another “incomplete” stadium in Algeria. Seriously look at it! The upper tier is supposed to go all the way around but it does not. Anyway, the renovations that have been done at July 5 Stadium make it a candidate to host the CAFCL final even in this Covid-19 season.
9. Stade Abdelkader Khalef 🇩🇿
It’s not favoritism. Algeria does have some great stadiums. When completed (sigh), this stadium in Tizi Ouzou will be the new home of JS Kabylie. It will be nice to see an Algeria Ligue 1 team play football on actual grass. Haha!
8. Stade Olympique d’Ebimpe 🇨🇮
Ivory Coast now has a proper stadium. We want it to host the CAFCL final. We also want the revival of ASEC Mimosas as a strong club in African football. One can wish.
7. Japoma Stadium 🇨🇲
Surprise! Let us not be too hard on Cameroon. They had to turn down the chance of hosting the 2019/2020 CAFCL final because of Covid-19. It would not be a bad idea to give Japoma Stadium another shot in the future.
6. Cape Town Stadium 🇿🇦
This is a classic white elephant. South Africa really wasted money building a stadium that is barely used. It survives off hosting non-sporting events here and there since no PSL team can fill it. But it is still an iconic venue.
5. Moses Mabhida Stadium 🇿🇦
Is this the best stadium in Africa? What I can confirm is that South Africans love playing their domestic cup final in Durban. The CAF Champions League deserves to enjoy the hospitality of KwaZulu Natal.
4. Benjamin Mkapa Stadium 🇹🇿
People in Dar-es-Salaam love football. This is why we advocate for the expansion of the CAF Champions League group stage to 32 teams. We want Yanga and Simba to qualify every year. We also want this city to host the CAFCL final.
3. Stade Olympique de Rades 🇹🇳
For me, this is the spiritual home of the CAF Champions League. We have witnessed so many epic CAFCL moments at this stadium. I don’t understand why they ripped off all the seats in the curva sections for the Tunis Ultras though.
2. Cairo Stadium 🇪🇬
Cairo stadium. Do I really need to say more?
1. Soccer City 🇿🇦
If it is good enough for the World Cup final then it is good enough for the CAFCL final. I know it would be best for everyone if such a final was Orlando Pirates versus Kaizer Chiefs. But we don’t know when the Glamour Boys will be good enough for this high level of football.
