1. Zamalek wins Cairo Derby
Zamalek made a statement about their CAF Champions League chances with a 3-1 win over Al Ahly in the Cairo Derby. The White Knights have been excellent in big matches this season having won the CAF Super Cup and eliminated Esperance Tunis from the CAFCL. Zamalek fans will be happy that Achraf Bencharki and Mostafa Mohamed turned up for the Cairo Derby in the lead up to their CAFCL semis against Raja Casablanca.
As for Al Ahly, this was a big hit on their aura of invincibility even though it was only their second loss this season. Coach, Rene Weiler did mention that he was “not worried” about his team’s CAFCL chance despite the loss to Zamalek.
2. Simba commemorates Simba Day
Simba SC continue to make airwaves about their off-pitch activities ahead of their participation in the 2020/2021 CAF Champions League. The Tanzanian club commemorated the annual Simba Day with a 6-0 win over Vital’O of Burundi. The club also unveiled their new signings and celebrated their silverware-laden season. Everyone will be watching what they do in the CAFCL.
3. CAF and UEFA to work together
CAF and UEFA launched the “CAF & UEFA Assist League Development Programme” to support football leagues in Africa to improve their organization and economic sustainability. The project is part of the UEFA Assist Program that supports football federations and confederations outside Europe. African leagues will benefit from training, expert review and recommendations on what to do.
4. TP Mazembe return to training
TP Mazembe have finally resumed training in preparation of the new Linafoot and CAFCL season. It has been five months since TPM held a training session. I hope you can remember that their season essentially ended with their elimination from the CAF Champions League quarterfinal. Disinfection of the TP Mazembe stadium facilities preceded the return of Kamalondo side to training. Five players are expected to link up with the rest of the squad soon. These are: Kabaso Chongo, Tandi Mwape, Joseph Ochaya, Glody Likonza and Arsene Zola.

5. Badr Banoun survives injury scare
Raja Casablanca center-back, Badr Banoun survived a major injury scare this week. The defender collided with a FUS Rabat player in their Botola meeting and he had to be taken to hospital unconscious. Luckily, Banoun has been confirmed to be good to resume playing after a few days of rest. Raja Casablanca will play Zamalek in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.
